ASO Concert March 18

Music at Abington looks forward to presenting a concert of beauty to raise your spirits and to raise funds for those suffering war in Ukraine Friday, March 18, 7:30p.m.
The concert is offered for free with all freewill donations made at the concert or by online listeners directed to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to aid in Ukraine refugee assistance. Thank you for generously supporting those in need at this time. We hope this concert can be a sign of our connection and humanity in this community as we reach across the world in hope and support, as well.
This program by the Abington Symphony Orchestra under the direction of John Sall features two works brimming with personality and point of view. Gwyneth Walker’s “About Leaves” evokes colorful images drawn from lines in three different poems by Robert Frost about leaves. Walker’s vibrant balance of colorful writing for woodwind soloists and lush string sonorities gives the work an engaging point of view and invites the listener to see in new ways. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in Bb may be less well known that 3rd and the 5th which surround it, but it is marked by many of the same traits of heroic drive and dramatic sonorities. From the reserved and pensive introduction to the thrilling finale you’ll recognize Beethoven’s inimitable voice and energy. Although our original plan for this program included a special guest soloist, a necessary change in personal schedule coupled with a January pause in orchestra rehearsals during our Covid surge made it clear that moving this collaboration to a later date was best. We look forward to the Bach at another time!
