CHILDREN'S MINISTRY

Abington Presbyterian Church has a vibrant Children’s Ministry program.

Our Sunday School program centers on stories from the Bible that teach us about God, Jesus and people of faith. Our curriculum is grounded in our identity as a Presbyterian Church in the PCUSA.

Kindergarten through 5th grade Rotation Model Sunday School

The structure of our classes for Kindergarten through 5th grades is the Workshop Rotation Model. Children experience a Bible story over several weeks through art, games, science, drama, music and/or cooking. This model teaches the Bible stories in a variety of settings and allows for a broad range of children’s learning styles.

Each class also stays in Worship at least one week per rotation, so they can experience being a part of the congregation with their families.

Sunday Morning Schedule
(Sept. – June)

The children come to worship with their parents at the 10:00 am service. After the Children’s Message, the children are dismissed to their church school workshops. They first gather all together to sing a song, recite the Lord’s Prayer and collect offering. Then the children are led by adults, who serve as “Shepherds”, to one of a range of workshops where they learn more about the Bible. The workshops may include: Art, Music, Bible Games, Drama, Science and Cooking. In each of these workshops the Bible story is presented by a Sunday School teacher. The children learn more about the specific story through the activity appropriate to that workshop. The material presented to the children is presented in multi-week units throughout the school year.

Nursery Care

There is nursery care for infants and toddlers from 8:45 am-9:45 am and during the 10 am Celebration Worship Service.  Our nursery and toddler rooms are located on the 1st floor of the Education Building.

Toddlers & 4 year olds

It is important that our children begin their educational experiences early in life.  Once children are baptized, they begin the journey of the Christian life. An essential ingredient in that journey is learning about the faith and the faith community into which they are baptized. We begin our Christian Education Ministry at APC at age 30 months or 2 ½ years.  On Sunday
morning a class for children 30 months through 4 years of age is held on the second floor of the Education Building. In this class young children begin to learn about their faith.  Preschool children learn about God primarily through play and storytelling. Each week the teachers read Bible stories, foster cooperative play, lead a craft, and sing with the children. Our youngest members begin their faith journey in fun and joy.

5th & 6th Grade Sunday School

Our 5th and 6th graders take part in a Bible Survey class during our regular Sunday School hour at 10 am. Each year they will study an overview of either the Old Testament or the New Testament. The survey rotates year to year. The class pulls together the many Bible stories that they have learned in the precious years into one comprehensive timeline.

Summer Sunday School Classes
(mid-June-August)

During the summer months we offer a ‘one room schoolhouse’ experience for children in preschool through 2nd grade, and 3rd through 6th grade. Both summer Sunday School classes offer an opportunity to play and build fellowship and community, a Bible story, a snack, and time to make a craft or other activity. Children in the younger class report directly to the class at 10 am. Children in 3 rd through 6th grades depart for the class after the children’s moment during worship.
