APC Members and Friends:

First a note from Rev. Aaron, our new Associate Pastor –

Greetings, Church!

It has been a holy whirlwind these past several weeks, but in the best possible way. My family and I continue to experience such wonderful kindness and hospitality from this congregation. In that vein, I want to thank everyone on the nominating committee, fellow church staff members, Pastor Kirby, and any volunteers who have had a hand in the events surrounding my call. The receptions were wonderful and I treasure the smiles and handshakes I have received.

We thought it might be helpful for me to include a few details about me that have come into greater focus since the congregational meeting. First, while I am tremendously excited to spend time in and get to know the greater Abington community, my family and I do not have any plans to relocate. After spending seven years(!) in a dorm apartment on the campus of the school where I served, we moved into a beautiful farmhouse on 2 ½ acres in Titusville, NJ. We are four miles south of Lambertville/New Hope, just over the river from Washington Crossing, PA. My commute is not bad and I plan to take the West Trenton SEPTA line to mix it up. Second, I plan to work from home one day per week. I am grateful that this is a possibility and commit to being available by email and phone. The exact weekday has yet to be determined and will be made available as soon as possible. Finally, it appears my day off during the week will be Thursdays. My office is number 104 at extension 4060; I welcome visitors!  My email address is ATwitchell@apcusa.org

Regarding my duties and areas of responsibility, many have been communicated regarding my role as associate pastor of education and youth. Beyond those ministries and programming, I am looking forward to serving on the Christian Education council as well as its Youth sub-committee, and the Mission council. Rounding out my ministry here will be worship leadership and any pastoral care that may come my way, which I am humbled to help provide.

I am eager to get to know everyone and to immerse myself in the life and work of this church as a house of prayer for all people!

Rev. Aaron

This Sunday, January 19, worship services are at 8 and 10 a.m.  This week and next week will be an examination of some scripture texts about discipleship.  The readings are Sunday are: Isaiah 49:1-7 and John 1:29-42 with a sermon title, “Come and See.”

At 8:45 a.m. the Sunday morning Bible Study which focuses on the book of Galatians will take place in Room 108.  At the same time, in the parlor, Adult Forum focuses on Cradle of Hope, which is a home for single mothers and their children.  The program will be led by Rachel Mullelly.

As part of our Martin Luther King weekend observance, Music At Abington will present Keith Spencer - We Shall Not Be Moved: Songs and Speeches from the Civil Rights Movement. From the mournful call of the Negro spiritual to the cry of protest and purpose signifying the African-American experience from the mid-1950s to late 1960s, We Shall Not Be Moved presents the music that captured the essence and call of the Civil Rights Movement. Singer/Actor Keith Spencer presents this inspiring experience through popular songs and poignant readings associated with the Civil Rights.. 3 p.m. this Sunday, January 19 in the Parish Hall.

Last year, APC partnered with First Presbyterian Church of Olney in our observance of Martin Luther King’s birthday.  Our coalition of churches that are joining together for common events on Monday, January 20 has grown.  We now have Cedar Park Presbyterian, Grace Presbyterian, and First Presbyterian of Olney as partners for our observance.  This year, the events will be held at Grace Presbyterian in Jenkintown at 444 York Road.  It will be a time of worship and service.  a brief worship service begins at 9 AM, followed by onsite and offsite service projects to help meet the needs of our community.

- Transportation from the APC Parking Lot leaves at 8:15 AM (or you can go directly to Grace)

Among the service projects is opportunity to pack aid bags, buckets and kits for disaster victims, homeless and those with insufficient means.

- If you can’t go, you can still participate by donating. APC’s focus is non-perishable food items* for the Whosoever Gospel Mission in Germantown which can be dropped off at church no later than this Sunday, January 12th. You can also bring donations with you to the event.

*canned beef stew; canned beef ravioli; sloppy joe sauce; canned chicken; salad dressings; BBQ sauce; spaghetti sauce (cans or plastic bottles preferred); sugar (10# bags or smaller); powdered iced tea mix; ground coffee.

The Church Office will be closed on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Holiday.

Session will be meeting on January 22 to adopt a budget for 2020.  If you didn’t get your 2020 pledge card in, now would be a great time to do so.  Also, the amount APC pays to presbytery and the PC(U.S.A.) General Assembly for each member each year is $30.  If you are able to cover this amount for the number of members in your family, that helps the APC budget cover other areas.  Make your check out to Abington Presbyterian Church and put ‘apportionment’ in the memo line.  Thanks!

Help our new Associate Pastor and other new folks out: wear your church name tag this Sunday and in coming weeks.

With joy,

Rev. Kirby
