2017 Annual Report

2018 Capital Campaign Commitment Card

March 25, 2018

It will be Palm Sunday on March 25th!  We’ll be reading the account of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem from Mark 11:1-10.  This week will also be the conclusion to the sermon series entitled “Via Dolorosa.”  This week’s sermon is entitled, “The Crux.”  Other scripture passages for the day will be Psalm 22 and Mark 15:21-41.

A note for families with children: All children are invited to participate in the Palm Sunday procession. We will meet in the Parish Hall to line up. We will gather to hand out palm branches. After children wave palms they will sit with Mrs. Sall until being dismissed to Sunday School. Preschool children should meet in their classrooms and will attend the parade with their teachers and then head back to class. We hope you will come commemorate Jesus’ joyous entrance into Jerusalem.

Also, this week we will collect the One Great Hour of Sharing fish banks. Please bring yours to church on Sunday.

For the Adult Forum this week in the parlor Sunday at 8:45 a.m., the focus will be on keeping kosher, led by Allison Dwyer Levine and Deb Langer.  The Bible Class will be led by Dr. Stephen Kim, with the title, “Why I am a Christian,” meeting in room 108 at 8:45 a.m.

There will be Fancy Fellowship following 10 a.m. worship this week in the parlor.  A joint Session/Diaconate meeting will follow the 10 a.m. worship service this Sunday in the Parish Hall.

Looking ahead: During Holy Week, there will be a Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. March 29.  This service commemorates the last supper Jesus shared with his followers before his death.  On Good Friday at 1 p.m. on March 30, we will have a service that focuses on the seven statements Jesus makes from the cross, with opportunities for prayers, meditations, and singing.  On Easter morning, weather permitting, our first service begins at 7:30 a.m. in our cemetery on the east side of Old York Road and concludes in the sanctuary.  If there is precipitation, this service will still take place, but indoors.  Our other two services that include brass accompaniment that morning will be in the sanctuary at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.  Please note the different worship times that allow us to offer three services on Easter morning.  At 10 a.m. there will be egg hunts for children.

On the Saturday after Easter, April 7, come join the 8:00 a.m. discussion with the Theological Book Club that will focus on the New York Times’ bestseller, “Everything Happens for a Reason: And Other Lies I’ve Loved,” written by Kate Bowler, a professor at Duke Divinity School who shares her thoughts, feelings, and ponderings in sharing her experience of a serious cancer diagnosis.  The group gathers in Kirby’s office for breakfast snacks and discussion.  Come join us!

If you are in your 20’s or 30’s, please come and help start a new fellowship group. Saturday, April 7th at 6:30 pm there will be a pot luck dinner at the home of Tink and Ralph McDevitt in Jenkintown.  RSVP: tinkmcdevitt@gmail.com or 267-474-7359.  Please join with other Abington Presbyterian Church Young Adults in an evening of fun, food and fellowship. Bring your favorite beverage and a dish to share. Bring a friend, make new friends, renew old friendships.

Sunday, April 8, is Older Adult Sunday. The committee for Older Adult Ministry will honor all members of the church who have been with us for 50 years or more at the 10:00 worship service and following that day.

Sunday, April 22 will be Commitment Sunday for the Capital Campaign.

Thanks to all those who made the Memorial Concert such a wonderful and healing event.

With joy in service,

Kirby Lawrence Hill
